Essentially, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) converts voice
into data, and sends it across the internet. At the remote end
data is converted back into voice so a conversation takes
place. As the calls are not going via the wired PSTN (Public
Services Telephone Network) no call charges are incurred.
IP keysets give users their phone extension on the central
telephone system whilst at home, another office or elsewhere
in the world. Softphones - virtual handsets - sit on the laptop
providing users with direct communication to head office
making mobile working easy. Link the telephone systems of
satellite offices together on a voice network and the
high volume of 'internal' calls become free of charge.
SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) provides an alternative to
analogue and ISDN trunk lines, allowing cheaper calls via the
internet to organisations who may not even be on an IP
system themselves. BT Century 21 Network is updating
telephone exchanges across the nation to make successful
internet telephony a mainstream reality.
